In Place of Strife

The Mediation Chambers

Professor Sir Hugh Laddie, In Place of Strife mediator, dies

Thursday, 4th December 2008

It is with sadness that we report the death of Hugh Laddie at the age of only 62. He was a distinguished member of the Intellectual Property and Information Technology mediation panel.Michael Cover, IP solicitor and mediator, writes:"In practice, Hugh was one of the two Leading Counsel that, in his era, dominated the intellectual property bar. I remember instructing Hugh on behalf of my firm and myself when we appeared to be threatened with the Judge, before whom we were appearing, exercising his summary judgement over us as solicitors. This was in relation to the executing of trap orders in a passing off case. Hugh worked tirelessly all weekend and, by the end of the hearing, the Judge said that what may or may not have happened was a matter for our professional body, and all was sweetness and light. This demonstrated Hugh's application, his advocacy skills and his understanding of how we, as human beings, felt in facing this threat to our professional reputation and careers! On the Bench, Hugh probably felt frustrated that he was not able to make as much of a difference as he had hoped. He also probably missed the camaraderie of the Bar. He never failed to do his duty, even if this resulted in controversy. As someone who could have been the solicitor on the receiving end of one of his very last judgements ( the case settled 10 minutes before he was to hand down the judgement), I can certainly say that.Hugh was also able to demonstrate that there was a career after the Bench. He became a distinguished academic, a consultant to IP solicitors, Rouse & Co, and a successful mediator as well as a passionate advocate of mediation.Above all, Hugh was a great human being. We do not make people like Hugh any more."
